Scouting For Food

Pack 1134 Food Drive

Message from John Murray, Scouting for Food Pack Chairman:

March 3, 2010

Hello All.  I am writing to you as the Pack Chair for “Scouting for Food”.

As many of you know, each year Pack 1134 participates in this terrific program along with Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs across the country and around the world, collecting food and other items for the poor and needy.  The goal in 2010 is for each of our cub scouts to collect 100 items for donation to local food banks--North Fulton Charities will be the primary beneficiary of our drive, but we will probably offer some of what we collect to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Peter Chanel, which also runs a small food bank offering emergency help to families and individuals in need.

Last year, our district raised more than 30,000 items, and Pack 1134 alone collected more than 2,200 food items for the North Fulton Charities and St. Vincent DePaul pantries.  We had 43 scouts participate and 21 of those met or exceed the goal to earn a patch.  That was a great result, but the need is still great and I know we can easily beat last year's numbers with your help.

So, what should you and your scouts do?  One idea your scout might want to try is the mailbox method. I've attached a sample note above that you can modify as necessary and print out. Then you can staple the printed notes to grocery bags and leave them in mailboxes around your neighborhood, explaining that you'll be by the following weekend to pick up the bags with their donations. Or, better yet, still knock on doors and make the pitch more personal.  We've found that almost everyone is eager to help out and it only takes about an hour on each of two weekends to gather more than enough to meet the 100 item goal (it helps if you have a wagon).

We have targeted the Blue and Gold Banquet on March 20, 2010, as the final collection date for our 2010 Scouting for Food Drive.  We'll have a truck at the banquet where you can drop off the items your scout collected.  Then, make sure that you check in and report your totals at the table we'll have set up for that purpose.  That way, your sons will be sure to get credit for their efforts--and their patches and certificates.

The Banquet is just a few days away.  That gives us just a few weeks (and two and a half weekends) to round up our donations.  You should each be hearing soon from your dens' Scouting for Food representatives with more details about this drive, but I wanted to be sure to reach each of you with a reminder.  Note, even if you aren't going to the Banquet, you can still participate in Scouting for Food!  You can drop your collections at my house (I'm at 22 Legacy Drive in Roswell, just a mile down Woodstock Road from Queen of Angels and St. Peter Chanel) or we can make other arrangements.  Scouting for Food actually runs through April 1, so your scout will still get credit, even if your donations get there a little bit late.

Please feel free to call me if I can answer questions or help in any way.  Or call your den SFF representatives.  In these tough economic times, our help is needed more than ever--let's make this our best Scouting for Food Drive yet!

John T. Murray

UPDATE:  In past years, participation in Scouting for Food entitled a scout to a certificate, and the scout got a patch as well if he collected at least 50 items.  This year, every scout who participates (i.e., every scout who collects and donates any items) will receive a participation patch.  Scouts who collect at least 100 items will receive a special 100 can patch.  There is no longer any significance attached to the 50-item level.  Needless to say, however, even if your scout isn't able to collect 100 items, every item he does collect goes to a great cause.  --JM
