Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 1134

History of Pack 1134

Cub Scout Pack 1134 was originally chartered by Queen of Angels Catholic School in Roswell, Georgia, in the fall of 2000 – the school’s first year of operation. This was an exciting time for both Scouts and parents alike as the contemporaneous founding of both the school and the Cub Scout Pack led to the formation of many new friendships and the enjoyment of many new experiences.

The Pack started with eight Scouts and grew rapidly during its first year. By the following fall, membership had grown to five dens comprised of six to seven Scouts each. Since then, membership within the Pack has averaged about 70 Scouts. As Pack 1134 moves into the 2009-2010 charter year, membership is projected at approximately 80 Cub Scouts with over 25 registered adult leaders.  While most of the Scouts attend either Queen of Angels Catholic School or the adjacent parish, St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church, many families not affiliated with these institutions have joined Pack 1134 due to its reputation for providing a superior Scouting experience in a faith-based environment.

Pack 1134 is part of the Chattahoochee District (www.cdbsa.org) of the Atlanta Area Council (www.atlantabsa.org) of the Boy Scouts of America (www.scouting.org).  The Pack has been and remains an active participant in both District and Council events such as Cub-o-Rama achievement days, Webelos Encampments, Twilight Day Camps, summer Family Camping, and Friends of Scouting fundraisers. The Pack has participated in community events, such as the annual Roswell Youth Day Parade, and has engaged in numerous service projects, including an annual Scouting for Food drive, presentation of Christmas programs at senior citizen residence facilities and participation in the Toys for Tots program.

Since its inception, Pack 1134 has provided an excellent, fun-filled and values-driven educational experience for its Scouts.  In addition to Den activities, the yearly Pack program includes two camping trips, a Pinewood Derby, a winter outing, a Webelos crossover ceremony, a Tiger Scouts graduation ceremony and an annual Blue & Gold Awards Dinner.  Camping trips have taken place at the superb facilities maintained by the Atlanta Area Council – Bert Adams Scout Reservation near
Covington and Woodruff Scout Reservation near Blue Ridge – and at Scoutland near Lake Lanier and Lake Altoona.  Past winter outings have included excursions to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum and 165th National Guard Air Wing near Savannah; Fort Sumter and the U.S.S. Yorktown aircraft carrier in Charleston, South Carolina; the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama; and Discovery Place in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Throughout its brief history, Pack 1134 has received outstanding support from its chartered organization.  Queen of Angels’ first principal, Sister Patricia Clune, supported the organizational efforts of the Pack’s founding parents and agreed to allow the use of the school’s facilities for Pack meetings and other events.  The current principal, Dr. Kathryn Wood (herself the daughter, sister, and sister-in-law of Eagle Scouts and the mother of three Eagle Scouts), has continued this support, facilitating Pack events and recruiting, assisting with the coordination of youth protection training mandated by the Archdiocese of Atlanta for adult Scout volunteers, and granting permission for Scouts to proudly wear their Cub Scout uniforms to school on designated days.  In appreciation for this support, Pack 1134, in the fall of 2006, assumed a leadership role in coordinating the school’s Fall and Spring Planting Days.

In 2006, Pack 1134 began a formal ministry association with St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church. This association has allowed the Pack to expand its recruiting base and has also solidified the Pack’s relationship with the parish-chartered Boy Scout Troop 1134 (http://troop1134.org/).  Many of the Cubs in Pack 1134 graduate to Troop 1134 after completing their Cub Scout experience, and many of the Pack parents and leaders have become leaders, committee members and merit badge counselors for the Troop. In March of 2009, eleven of the Pack’s Scouts – all of whom had earned Cub Scouting’s highest rank, the Arrow of Light – crossed over into Troop 1134

Pack 1134 is a truly outstanding Cub Scout pack.  Among other awards, the Pack has won the Boy Scouts of America’s National Quality Unit Award every year since its inception and the Chattahoochee District’s rigorous Honor Unit Award for the past five years.  More importantly, however, the Pack – through the efforts of its leaders and parents and the hard work of its Scouts – has produced boys (young men) who have been shaped by the Scouting experience and its commitment to religious values, high morals, outstanding character and good citizenship.
